Joseph Mendoza

Officer, Philippine National Army; former Chief of the Counter Intelligence Division

Why I am a Marauder

The Americans came when my country needed them. They fought and died alongside my father and grandfather and their brothers and sisters with honor, courage and bravery to help free my people from

Joseph Mendoza and his wife

Japanese tyranny.

The debt owed to so many so long ago may have been forgotten by some but not the proud people of the Philippines.

In my career as a service man I’ve heard cries of family members of soldiers that are missing and it’s like a nightmare. I want to see happiness on the faces of family members not such sadness.

To be a Marauder one must have a strong heart. One thing for sure it’s a sacrifice on our part. We need even to sacrifice our own lives if need be, to bring back the fallen one to their final rest . With this mind setting of mine I will go anywhere in the world the Marauders go proudly representing the loyalty and dignity of the people of the Philippines.

Every time I pass by to a military cemetery, I remembered the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and one big question will come across in my mind, is there a way I can identify the brave man lying down there? But I know that the answer of this question is next to impossible, if no one will dare to do so. To ease up my mind I’ll just whisper to the brave man lying their “your lucky enough compared to your other comrades that are still missing” and I deliver one snappy salute!
