Why I am a Marauder

 

In the time that I have known Ken, and considering my extensive military service, I have come to learn, understand, and appreciate the importance of the Marauder Mission. I consider it a privilege and honor to serve our Veterans in any capacity and what better way could there be than to help bring closure to the families of these heroic MIAs.

Background: Carlton A. Sherwood

Carlton Sherwood is a veteran Washington, D.C., newspaper and television correspondent, media consultant, author and documentary film-maker. He has the distinction of earning journalism’s highest honors in print and television news, the Pulitzer Prize and George Foster Peabody Award and several Emmy’s for his documentaries. Sherwood, whose professional communications and news experience spans nearly four decades, is currently President of Red, White and Blue Productions, Inc., a film production company headquartered in Harrisburg, PA. He formerly served as Broadcast Communications Director for Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and Special Media Advisor to Secretary of the Navy James Webb.

Experience

2004 to Present: President, Red, White And Blue Productions

Founder, President, documentary film company that produces broadcast quality, award-winning programs; including, “On Freedom’s Wings; Bound for Glory”, the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, aviators who broke the race barrier during World War II, and; “Company of Heroes”, first-hand accounts of Pennsylvania veterans whose exploits became famous in the World War II classic, “Band of Brothers”. These, and other films currently in progress, were produced for the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum for national distribution to broadcast outlets and schools with companion teacher lesson plans.

2003 to 2004: Executive Vice-President, WVC3 Group

Senior management partner in the Wvc3 Group, an international security, anti-terrorism, counter-intelligence firm headquartered in Reston, VA. Provided confidential consultation and services to various federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency. Represented several private sector firms specializing in new surveillance technologies, computer-based and satellite global communications systems.

1995 to 2003: Director, Commonwealth Media Services (CMS)

Restructured, managed the official television and radio bureau for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under Gov. Tom Ridge. CMS conducted daily television and radio news feeds, live studio and remote satellite transmissions and operated the state emergency command/communications center. CMS also produced broadcast-quality documentary, educational and public service video programs, including two Emmy-award-winning films, a first for any state agency.

1988 to 1995: Vice-President, Telequest Productions, Inc.

An independent major-market media consulting and video/film documentary company. Provided a wide-range of confidential services to television network and national print news organizations as well as select government, corporate and legal clients, primarily in the Washington, D.C., area.

1987 to 1988: Special Media Advisor To The Secretary Of The Navy

Provided confidential, media-related counsel to the Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff. Charged with the global restructuring of public affairs and internal communications systems for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

1985 to 1986: Chief Investigative Reporter, The Washington Times

Senior investigative reporter for a start-up metropolitan daily newspaper in Washington, D.C. Created and managed the initial enterprise/investigative reporting unit for what would become Washington’s “second” national newspaper.

1984 to 1985: Special Assignment Correspondent, Cnn (Cable News Network)

On-air investigative reporter and producer for cable network’s pioneering CNN. Correspondent with CNN’s original Special Assignment unit.

1982 to 1984: Investigative Reporter, CBS News

On-air investigative reporter and producer for cable network’s pioneering CNN. Correspondent with CNN’s original Special Assignment unit.

1982 to 1984: Investigative Reporter, CBS News

On-air investigative reporter and producer for CBS News and Top Ten affiliates in Boston (WNEV-TV) and Washington, D.C. (WDVM-TV). War Correspondent Beirut and Grenada.

1979 to 1982 National Investigative Reporter, Gannett News Service

White House, Congressional and national investigative reporter for Gannett News Service, the international wire service for the largest newspaper chain in the U.S. Created, directed the first joint projects unit between Gannett newspaper and television broadcast operations.

1968 to 1979: Reporter, Editor, Managing Editor And Executive Editor

Reporter, editor for several metro and suburban newspapers in the Philadelphia region, including The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, Camden (NJ) Courier-Post and Burlington County Times.

Professional Experience

Conducted theater-wide, Pentagon-sanctioned fact-finding missions to Iraq (2003), Afghanistan (2004) and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (2005). Newspaper and television daily reporting assignments included coverage of U.S. military operations in Beirut and Grenada; U.S./Soviet Summit Conferences; U.S. Presidential general election campaigns; 1981 attempted Presidential assassination; 1969-70 Washington, D.C., race and anti-war riots; high-profile federal court trials (1985 Westmoreland vs. CBS, Sharon vs. Time, Inc., 1971 anti-war trials in Camden, NJ, and Harrisburg, PA); the White House, Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court. Special project, investigative reporting assignments included in-depth series on political corruption; medical malpractice, organized crime, military sex/drug scandals, charitable and religious fraud and state-sanctioned child abuse.

Awards

Recipient of more than 100 awards for professional excellence. Three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, awarded the 1980 Pulitzer Gold Medal. Other major national honors include the George Foster Peabody Award, the National Headliner’s Award, the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award, the American Bar Assn. Silver Gavel, the Investigative Reporter’s and Editor’s Award, Women in Communications Clarion Award, the Hancock Award, the Kennedy Foundation Award, several Emmy Awards, the International Television and Film Critics Award, Cable Television’s ACE Award.

Commendations

Personal letters of commendation from the White House (President Reagan), the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, the Department of Defense, the National Spina Bifida Assn., the National Assn. for the Disabled and Handicapped, the Disabled American Veterans, the Blinded American Veterans Foundation. Presented Pennsylvania’s 2002 Meritorious Service Medal, the Commonwealth’s highest civilian award; the 2004 National Military Order of the Purple Heart Award for Distinguished Public Service to Combat Veterans.
