Why I am a Marauder

Today I am a member of Moore’s Marauders because this is my way of serving the men who served my country. The Marauders unselfishly perform great acts of kindness at great risk to themselves, asking nothing in return.

Some say our efforts celebrate war. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Marauders bring a much needed end to the war that continues on in the souls of those who lost loved ones. Many Americans like to wave flags on the 4th of July to show their patriotism.

Others shed tears on Memorial Day or perhaps visit a monument or two. For me and my fellow Marauders, that’s simply not enough. We will go anywhere and do whatever is necessary to bring closure to the families of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines that didn’t make it back from serving their country in times of need. That’s what the Marauders are all about and I’m damn proud to be one of them.

I have several family members that had served in the military:

  • Grandfather, Alton Harold Moen, was a mechanic in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He died in a plane crash while conducting a test flight in Florida.

  • My Great uncle, Lloyd Wiesert, served in the Army during WWII’s Pacific island-hopping campaign and was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of the wounds he suffered in the battle of Okinawa. My Great Uncle Lloyd was my family’s most celebrated war hero though he didn't talk about the war all that much. He had once told me about how he had his back pack shot off while running across a field. And, other stories about fighting hand to hand against his Japanese enemy while searching caves. He passed away in 1998, and I miss him very much.

  • Uncle Dale served as a photographer’s assistant in the Navy aboard the USS Princeton in 1957 - 1959.

  • My Father, James Lee Moen, served as pipe fitter aboard the USS Lexington from 1960-1962, in what turned out to be the early days of the Vietnam war.
